Measures approx. 55 х 74 cm (21¾ x 29 in). Very good condition. Joseph Zaritsky (Zaritzky) was born in Borisopol, Ukraine. Studied atthe Kiev Art Academy. Immigrated to Israel in 1923 and settled in Jerusalem.Between 1927- 1928 he lived in Paris. After he returned to Israel he moved toTel Aviv. For over 20 years he worked in watercolours, which he first exhibitedin the early 1920s, making a stunning impact and evoking enormous interest.From the middle 1940s into the early 1950s, Zaritsky evolved an abstractlanguage, and switched to painting in oils. He was the leader and moving spiritof the ‘New Horizons’ movement, whose members’ aspiration was to dissociatepainting from the anecdotal and narrative elements hitherto overshadowingIsraeli art, by adopting the ‘lyrical abstract’ trend. His manner of treatinglandscape, notably the way in which he succeeded in transforming fields intoabstract compositions, made him the patron of ‘lyrical’ abstraction. JosephZaritsky was one of the greatest Israeli painters.
