It is the BritishBranch of the World Women's International Zionist Organisation (WorldWIZO).TheFederation's founder and first President was Rebecca Sieff. RebeccaSieff (born Marks) spent most of her childhood in Manchester, whichin the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries was a centre forZionism in Britain. Chaim Weizmann (later the first President ofIsrael) lived there from 1904 and gathered around him many Zionistsupporters including Rebecca, her husband Israel Sieff and members ofthe Marks family. Women were at this time not encouraged tocontribute to the cause any more than joining in the fund raising andsupporting activities. During the First World War Rebecca Sieffjoined the Manchester Daughters of Zion and raised funds for PolishJewish Relief. In1917, the year of the Balfour Declaration, Rebecca and otherlike-minded women formed the "Ladies Committee" of theEnglish Zionist Federation. In1920, following Rebecca Sieff's first visit to Palestine, theFederation of Women Zionists called a conference of women fromEurope, the United States and South Africa in London. The resolutionwas passed to "form the Women's International ZionistOrganisation to promote the welfare of women and children inPalestine and to carry out specific works in the reconstruction ofPalestine". Thus WIZO itself was born.WIZOaimed to train Jewish women in Palestine and the Diaspora for work ina Jewish homeland and provide care for mothers and children inPalestine. During the 1920s British WIZO raised the funds to found anagricultural school, a domestic science training hostel, childwelfare centres and other facilities in Palestine. Members were alsoencouraged to promote and publicise the Zionist cause. Theheadquarters of the movement was based in London but numerousaffiliated societies were set up around the country. Followingthe establishment of the state of Israel in 1948 British WIZO becameinvolved in providing a wider variety of help. In the decades thatfollowed the organisation flourished and was by the 1960s "..probablythe most alive and most admired Jewish organisations in the country"(Chaim Bermant, Troubled Eden, p.118) and raised thousands of poundsevery year for Israel.
